Underused Spaces Series: From Squash Court to Flexible Studio
At IndigoFitness, we believe underused spaces in any facility present potential. In our Underused Spaces Series, we showcase gym transformation projects that unlock the hidden potential of overlooked rooms. Whether it’s a forgotten spin studio, or a disused squash court, these projects show what’s possible with smart gym design.
In this edition, we explore how we converted a disused squash court into a group training space at Carnoustie Leisure Centre, operated by Angus Alive, a Scottish local authority trust. Meeting the demand for flexible programming, community health initiatives, and better ROI from existing estate.
The Challenge: What to Do with a Disused Squash Court?
Across the UK, squash courts in leisure centres are increasingly underused due to shifting fitness trends. At Carnoustie Leisure Centre, one such court was no longer in demand and wasn’t generating income. Like many facilities, it had become dead space, a maintenance cost with no ROI.
Angus Alive needed a solution that would increase utilisation of the space, add versatile group training capacity, and support their wider goals around inclusive, community-focused health and fitness.

The Solution: From court to Community hub
Creating a multi-functional group training studio designed for high footfall, flexible programming and community.
Working closely with the Carnoustie team, IndigoFitness reimagined the space as a multi-purpose group training studio, one that could support everything from Les Mills CEREMONY classes and functional HIIT to mat-based Pilates and recovery sessions.

Key GYM DESIGN features included:
- Integrated creative storage to maximise floor space
- Zoned flooring for varied movement types
- Flexible equipment that supports both instructor-led and self-directed sessions
This wasn’t just a makeover, it was a strategic transformation to meet modern group fitness demands.
The Results: MEASURAbLE GROWTH IN Usage, Programming & Revenue
Since the transformation, the former squash court has been fully reactivated as a functional studio, driving significant impact across programming, engagement, and membership:
- 28+ new group fitness classes added
- 6,082 total attendees have taken part in Elevate classes
- 134 bolt-on memberships sold
- 624 annual members now benefit from access to this space
- Strong engagement across generations:
- Gen X: 2,288 participants
- Boomers: 1,921
- Gen Z: 383
- Millennials: 147
This isn’t just better use of space, it’s a strategic investment in member engagement, inclusive programming, and long-term revenue growth.
