How Activity Affects Gym Flooring Choices

When planning a new training space, or even a revamp of your current space, your first thought might be about the equipment. But hold on! First, focus on the types of training you want to offer and then consider grouping these into specific zones or areas within the space.  Next, still don’t think about gym equipment, but think about your flooring.

Step 1: Focus on Your Training Zones

Start by thinking about the types of training you want to offer and how you can group them into specific zones or areas within your space. Each area will have unique flooring requirements based on the activity, which will enhance functionality and create an efficient flow throughout your gym.

Step 2: Match Flooring to Activities

Now that you’ve mapped out your zones, let’s explore the ideal flooring solutions for each type of training:

Strength & Conditioning

For strength areas, the correct gym flooring is essential for optimising performance and safety.  The gym flooring solution must be durable enough to endure the demands of repeated impacts with heavy weights. We recommend a minimum of 20mm rubber flooring to handle the demands of strength and conditioning movements.

Studio

In studios, versatility is key. Whether it’s Pilates, BODYPUMP, or HIIT, you need flooring that’s adaptable but doesn’t require the same impact protection as strength zones. A thinner rubber tile or roll would be our recommendation for flexibility.

Cardio

Cardio zones require flooring that balances durability, traction, and aesthetic appeal. A thinner rubber tile 5mm-7mm would be a good choice. Depending on your space, consider an acoustic survey to mitigate noise and vibrations from cardio machines, especially if you share walls or floors with other rooms and buildings.

Olympic Lifting

For Olympic lifting, dynamic movements such as the snatch and clean and jerk, which require precision, stability, and controlled landings.  A thick rubber tile combined with Olympic lifting platforms create a safe and performance-driven training space that allows athletes to focus solely on perfecting their lifting

Free Weights

Like Olympic lifting zones, free weights areas need the most durable and shock absorbing flooring solution. Thick rubber tiles, potentially with additional acoustic materials, would be the preferred option.  It is important to minimise noise and vibrations throughout the rest of your training space and to adjoining rooms and buildings.

Functional Training

Functional training spaces require flooring that’s versatile enough for a wide range of movements. You’ll want a surface with good traction and some shock absorption. A mid-thickness rubber solution is ideal here, as would be an artificial turf area or track.

Combat

Combat sports areas need flooring that prioritises shock absorption, durability, and comfort for high-impact movements. EVA foam tiles are the best option, providing a soft but durable surface that supports the intensity of combat training.

Outdoor

For outdoor training areas, the flooring must combine durability, weather resistance, and performance. Thick rubber tiles and astro-turf are a great combination and will provide the perfect foundation for safe and effective outdoor fitness activities
