Designing for Success: How to Create a Training Space That Works Part 1
Opening or upgrading an independent gym is an exciting venture. But the difference between a facility that thrives and one that struggles often comes down to gym design. The best gyms don’t just line up equipment, they create training spaces that consider balancing the flow, flooring, and kit to deliver a member experience that keeps people coming back.
At IndigoFitness, every facility we create is backed by British design and manufacturing, combining craftsmanship with practical experience to deliver training spaces built to last.
1.Start with the Member Experience
Think beyond kit. Every touchpoint a member has with your facility shapes their perception and retention:
- First impressions: What do people see, hear, and feel when they walk in?
- Flow: Can members easily move from warm-up to training zones without confusion or congestion?
- Zones: Clear, defined areas, strength, functional, cardio, recovery, make training smoother and safer.
- Storage: Smart, well-designed storage keeps the space uncluttered and makes it effortless for members to find, use, and return kit.
“When your layout is intuitive, your members spend less time figuring out where to go and more time training.” — Chris Parr, IndigoFitness
A training space should feel effortless to navigate.
2. Reverse Engineer from Your Core Offering
Ask yourself: What’s the heart of my gym?
- Group training?
- Fitness racing e.g. HYROX?
- Strength and conditioning?
- Olympic lifitng?
- A mix of everything?
Start with that core product and we’ll design backwards. Too many gyms try to be all things to all people, which creates cluttered layouts and diluted value. Instead, let your primary offering shape your space and allocate kit, zones, storage, and floor area accordingly.
3. Work from the Floor Up
Flooring is the foundation of your gym. Literally and strategically. It impacts safety, noise, durability, and what training styles you can support.
- Heavy lifts and personal bests need durable gym flooring.
- Functional training benefits from sled tracks, turf, floor markings and defined zones.
- Multi-use spaces need flooring that can handle transitions.
As the exclusive UK supplier of Duratrain, paviFLEX and our own gym flooring range, IndigoFitness ensures you have an array of flooring choices to support your facility. We also have in house technical experts who can advise and install your flooring solutions. Ensuring your training space is built on foundations that last and support every aspect of your facilities training programme.
