Underused Spaces Series: From Spin Studio to Flexible Group Training Hub
At IndigoFitness, we believe that every square metre of space has potential. In our Underused Spaces Series, we explore gym transformations that unlock new value from overlooked areas. In this edition, we spotlight the revitalisation of a disused spin studio into a flexible group training space, driving community, engagement, and member lifetime value.
The Challenge: What to Do with a Disused Spin Studio?
Once a premium feature in many facilities, standalone spin studios are now under scrutiny. Changing trends and evolving member preferences have led some spaces to become underutilised. That was the case here, a well-equipped but increasingly idle spin room that no longer aligned with current demand.
The goal? Repurpose it to attract new demographics, support diverse programming, and drive better ROI across the board.

The Solution: Reimagining for Flexibility and Connection
Working closely with the operator Angus Alive, we transformed the spin studio into a flexible group training hub capable of hosting instructor-led classes, Les Mills CEREMONY classes, small group PT, and self-directed workouts. Drawing on lessons from recent industry insights, the studio was designed with community, adaptability, and inclusivity at its core.

Key GYM DESIGN features included:
- Integrated creative storage to maximise floor space
- Zoned flooring for varied movement types
- Flexible equipment that supports both instructor-led and self-directed sessions
This wasn’t just a makeover, it was a strategic pivot to align with the future of group exercise.
The Results: MEASURAbLE GROWTH IN Engagement and Value
Since opening, the reimagined flexible studio space has delivered across key performance areas:
- 28+ new group fitness classes added to the timetable
- 6,082 total attendees have taken part in Elevate classes
- 134 bolt-on memberships sold
- 624 annual members now benefit from access to this space
- Strong engagement across generations:
- Gen X: 2,288 participants
- Boomers: 1,921
- Gen Z: 383
- Millennials: 147
This isn’t just better space utilisation. It’s a sustainable engagement model that speaks to what today’s members are looking for, immersive, guided, social fitness experiences.

Aligning With Industry Trends
As recent insights in Health Club Management point out, demand for live fitness experiences is at an all-time high. Group training is increasingly seen as the heartbeat of the club experience:
- Higher lifetime value: Class participants attend more often and refer more friends.
- Community & wellbeing: In an era of rising loneliness, group classes provide essential in-person connection.
- Appealing to new audiences: Programmes like Les Mills Ceremony have drawn in new demographics, with some sites reporting 65% male attendance and strong uptake from Gen Z.
- Staff development: Flexible group training spaces make it easier to train PTs as instructors, boosting internal value and team versatility.
