4 Battalion REME

Location: Wiltshire, England
Industry: Military

4BN REME approached IndigoFitness with a clear objective: to transform an outdated and restrictive gymnasium into a modern, adaptable training space capable of supporting both rehabilitation and operational readiness. Working within an existing industrial footprint and a compressed timeline, the project required a design-led approach that prioritised function, flow, and long-term usability.

The Situation

The existing facility had been created by combining five separate rooms into one long, narrow space. While this increased overall square footage, it significantly limited how the gym could be used in practice.

The layout lacked structure and cohesion. Equipment had been accumulated over time. A mix of ageing cardio, cable machines, racks and pulley systems, resulting in a disjointed environment with little space to move, let alone train effectively.

From an operational perspective, RAPTCI required a far more versatile facility. The gym needed to support:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 training focused on individual conditioning and rehabilitation
  • Elements of Level 3 training to prepare personnel returning to full unit physical training and deployment

Alongside this, the project was working to a fixed deadline with funding approved and timelines tightly controlled.  Leaving approximately eight weeks from initial engagement to completion.

The Solution

Rather than simply updating equipment, the focus was on fundamentally rethinking how the space should function.

With the existing flooring still in good condition, the opportunity was to invest fully in layout, structure and training usability. A strategic redesign was developed to transform the long, narrow footprint into a cohesive, multi-functional training environment.

The key decision was to move away from density-led thinking and instead introduce clear zoning, creating five distinct areas aligned to specific training needs. This approach allowed the space to support multiple users and training objectives simultaneously, while improving flow and usability throughout.

A bespoke training rig forms the backbone of the facility, four racks connected via overhead bridging creating a central hub for functional and strength-based training. Integrated storage ensures the space remains organised and efficient.

Branding was carefully incorporated to reinforce unit identity and pride:

RAPTC & REME branding
– 4BN REME identification integrated into the racks

This balanced heritage with a modern, professional aesthetic, aligning the space with the standards expected of a high-performance military facility.

      The Result

The transformation was delivered within an accelerated timeline, with installation completed, just six weeks from the initial site visit.

The result is a fully integrated, multi-purpose training space that supports rehabilitation, conditioning and performance progression within a single, coherent space. By introducing structured zones and improving flow, the facility now enables:

      – Simultaneous training across multiple levels and programmes
      – A clear progression pathway from rehabilitation through to operational readiness
      – Improved user experience, safety, and efficiency

What was once a fragmented, restrictive gym is now a purpose-built training space that reflects both the demands of the unit and the standards of modern military training spaces.
