Platform 81 – New Performance Gym at Canolfan Brailsford, Bangor University

After Bangor Gymnastics club moved onto new premises, Canolfan Brailsford were left with an empty space and a decision to make on how to improve their facility. They felt a multi-function fitness room was the way to go, and put the project out for tender – looking for creative and innovative proposals that would meet their ideas and hit their budget.

The requirement included 350sq.m of heavy duty flooring, nine lifting platforms suitable for long term Olympic lifting use, a group lifting area, multi-use track area, and training rig.

After a successful tender bid, supported by 3D visuals and custom design proposals, Indigo Fitness were appointed preferred supplier for the contract.

The Situation

Indigo proposed a single level, seamless flooring surface across the whole training space, eliminating trip hazards whilst retaining the ability to deliver the required level of training variety. The floor comprised of the following:

  • 32mm DuraTRAIN premium flooring tiles for the whole of the lifting area, combined with integrated oak lifting platforms throughout. The DuraTRAIN tiles are perfect for withstanding repeated impact from daily free weight training and offer superior noise and vibration attenuation.
  • Custom made 8m long integrated platform for group lifting.
  • 4m wide multi use area running the whole length of the training space, constructed from layers of plyometric materials. topped with hard-wearing, non-directional artificial turf, with inlaid markings for longevity.

The Solution

Indigo also designed a fully bespoke training rig, specifically customised in both functionality and colour to meet the requirements of Bangor University. Wall fixing was suggested to reduce the footprint and maximise the amount of flexible training space. The rig was also intended to complement existing Life Fitness and Hammer Strength products being moved into the new Platform 81 gym.

The Indigo team completed the installation of the entire facility, including all flooring and wall fixings, and worked closely with Richard Bennett, Commercial Services Director, and Dave Jones, Health and Fitness Manager throughout the whole process.
