The Situation

To meet the growing demand for functional class training, Barrhead Foundry aimed to create a modern fitness studio within an unused space, that could cater to diverse training needs. IndigoFitness was chosen to design, manufacture, and install the new fitness studio and create a new fitness scene.

Barrhead Foundry faced several challenges to upgrade their fitness studio:

Substandard Subfloor: The previous subfloor was not up to a useable standard for a functional studio training space. It lacked the necessary resilience and shock absorption, posing a risk for both users and equipment.
Complex Project Coordination: The refurbishment was part of a larger project involving multiple contractors and suppliers. Coordinating with the broader team to ensure seamless integration of the new fitness studio was a significant challenge.

The Solution

IndigoFitness provided tailored solutions to address these challenges, ensuring the new fitness studio would provide the best fitness class experience.

Subfloor Solution

Recognising the importance of a robust subfloor, IndigoFitness advised on the best solution to ensure the gym flooring could withstand the rigors of high-intensity and functional training. The team recommended and installed 70 sqm of turf with thick underlay for enhanced shock absorption, paired with high-impact tiles over an equivalent area to provide additional resilience and durability for different training styles.

Project Coordination

Working as part of a wider contractor team, IndigoFitness effectively coordinated with other suppliers and contractors. This collaboration ensured the timely and efficient completion of the studio project, installing the new fitness studio seamlessly.

The Result

The new fitness studio means Barrhead Foundry can expand its fitness membership and welcome additional revenue opportunities that will help ensure the sustainability of services moving forwards.

Enhanced User Experience: Members now enjoy a modern training space that supports a wide range of workouts for group training and open gym opportunities.

Increased Membership: The upgraded training space has enabled the launch of new classes and have attracted new members, boosting overall membership numbers and enhancing the community’s perception of Barrhead Foundry as a fitness destination.

Optimised Use of Space: The refurbishment transformed a mid-70s built area, previously serving as a stage and later as a multi-use activity room, into a modern, functional fitness studio.

How has the layout of the studio contributed to the functionality and flow of classes?

The Grids offering of equipment, flooring and layout has allowed us to launch new classes that would have been difficult in our existing gyms and studios. The inclusion of punch bags has meant that our Grid-box classes get a far better experience for the customers whilst the turfed gym flooring means we can help customers achieve a far wider range of fitness goals.

How have your members responded to the new studio?

They are loving it. The Grid is very different to any other refurbishments we have done before so the members are really surprised by what we’ve done with it.

How was the space used before the refurb?

The original space was part of the building which was built in the mid 70s. It served as a stage on to the main sports hall originally and laterally as a multi-use activity room which the local boxing club used regularly until they moved to their own facility.
