Humberside Fire & Rescue Service needed a practical and adaptable way to provide high-quality fitness facilities for their teams across a wide, rural service area. The Situation

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service faced several challenges in supporting staff fitness and operational readiness:

Limited internal space at the station meant there was no room to expand gym facilities.
As a large, rural service, many on-call stations had no easy access to training facilities, yet staff needed to maintain the high levels of physical fitness required for their role.
The solution had to be relocatable, ensuring it could be moved between rural sites as operational needs changed.
Facilities had to support year-round training, both indoors and outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.

The Solution

IndigoFitness designed and delivered a fully customised ISO container gym that addressed every challenge faced by Humberside Fire & Rescue Service. At the heart of the design was a focus on maximising space. By incorporating a carefully planned internal rack and storage system, the container allowed multiple users to train at once without feeling restricted. The high-cube variant provided extra height, creating room for more efficient storage and functional movements such as pull-ups.

Another critical requirement was flexibility. The container was built to be relocatable, enabling the service to transport it between different rural sites as operational needs evolved. This meant that no matter where teams were based, they could still benefit from a consistent, high-quality training space..

To ensure the facility could be used year-round, IndigoFitness equipped the container with features that made it practical in all conditions. Internal PIR sensor-controlled lighting and external switch-controlled lighting meant the space was functional outside of daylight hours. A thermostat-controlled heating system, combined with full insulation, keep the environment comfortable even during the winter.

External wall racks with multiple attachments increased the training capacity, giving users the option to exercise both inside and outside the unit. This versatility provided a much wider range of functional training opportunities and supported group sessions.

Finally, the container was finished with clear external branding, proudly identifying it as a service asset. This not only gave the facility a professional appearance but also reinforced the identity and pride of the organisation.

The Result

The project delivered a professional standard indoor/outdoor training space that could be relocated across the region and used by staff all year round. Firefighters now have reliable access to the equipment they need to maintain peak fitness levels, regardless of location. The ability to train both inside and outside the unit has created a versatile space that supports everything from individual workouts to team-based functional training.

Beyond the practical benefits, the container has become a visible symbol of the service’s investment in staff wellbeing and operational readiness. With a professional finish and flexible design, the facility has not only enhanced training provision but also reinforced pride within the organisation.
