North Lanarkshire Council sought to enhance the training experience at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility by upgrading its existing gym. The goal was to expand the free weight and functional training areas while overcoming structural challenges related to the facility’s suspended timber subfloor. The Situation

The existing gym layout required a significant reconfiguration to meet the growing demand for strength and functional fitness training. Expanding the free weight and functional areas was essential to accommodate an increasing number of members while maintaining a versatile and engaging training space. However, a major obstacle was the suspended timber subfloor, which lacked the structural integrity needed to support heavy strength equipment and training. This would require specialist reinforcement to ensure both safety and longevity. Additionally, North Lanarkshire Council sought to optimise space for group training, integrating a multi-purpose training area that could support open gym sessions and structured HIIT-style classes without disrupting the main gym floor.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, IndigoFitness designed and delivered a comprehensive gym transformation:

Subfloor Reinforcement & Gym Layout Expansion – Extensive preparation work was carried out to strengthen the subfloor, ensuring it could safely support heavy strength equipment and training. The updated layout strategically increased the free weight and functional training areas to better serve members.

Creation of a Dedicated ‘Power Studio’ – A room-within-a-room concept was introduced to allow for dedicated HIIT-style classes without compromising general gym space. A boxing bag rail system was used to section off the studio when needed, creating a flexible training area.

Enhanced Training Zones with Smart Design – A custom-built cable wall with integrated mirrors was installed to create a visually striking dumbbell training zone while maximising space efficiency.
