IndigoFitness partnered with Southwark Council to undertake a large-scale gym refurbishment project across multiple sites in Southwark. With a vision to modernise fitness facilities, enhance branding, and optimise training spaces, Southwark Council sought a trusted partner capable of delivering gym design, high-quality equipment and efficient installations within tight deadlines.

The Situation

Southwark Council faced several key challenges that led them to partner with IndigoFitness:

Southwark Council were taking over the operation of their gyms from Everyone Active. They needed trusted partners to help refurbish and modernise their gym spaces while ensuring alignment with the council’s new branding aesthetics across all sites.

The council aimed to update all fitness centres with improved equipment provision, expanding functional and strength training areas while ensuring current members felt included and valued.

The project required completing six gym installations within a six-week period. Given IndigoFitness’ strong track record with the Ministry of Defence, local authorities, and high-profile clients like Third Space, Southwark Council was confident in their ability to deliver high-quality installations at scale.

The Solution

To meet the client’s needs, IndigoFitness delivered a comprehensive solution:
Conceptual Gym Design & Planning: The partnership began in February 2023 with IndigoFitness designing conceptual layouts for multiple sites for the whole gym space, extending beyond just the equipment areas IndigoFitness were supplying.
Advisory & Project Management: Through continuous collaboration, IndigoFitness became a key advisor throughout the project and secured the contract via a tender process.
Equipment Supply: The contract included supplying Free Weights (racks, platforms, benches, dumbbells, barbells, plates etc) and special projects, which include an outdoor training facility scheduled for installation in April 2025.
Personalisation: This included Custom back-to-back racks to create additional capacity to the previous training spaces and a more premium aesthetic. Custom logo plates, upholstery and graphix platforms using Southwark Leisure’s ‘MOVE’ branding ensured their identity was embedded across all sites.
Product Innovation: Introduction of the complete suite of Gungnir collarless bars, reducing clutter and creating a safe training experience.

The Result

The refurbishment delivered significant improvements across all fitness centres, reinforcing the council’s branding with custom elements including logo plates, upholstery and lifting platforms created a cohesive look and feel across locations. The upgraded designs increased the number of workstations while ensuring gym floors felt spacious and inviting. Additionally, premium touches such as stainless steel racks and benches, and the introduction of Gungnir collarless bars elevated Southwark’s gyms beyond standard local authority sites.
