IndigoFitness partnered with North Lanarkshire Council to transform Time Capsule Leisure Centre Gym ahead of its relaunch. Working within a challenging existing footprint, the project reimagines an ageing space into a modern, multi‑use training facility designed to serve the council’s broad and diverse community.

The refurbishment introduces enhanced strength and conditioning, expanded functional zones, and a new POWER boutique studio. Supporting NLC’s ambition to grow usage, engage new audiences, and improve member retention across the region.

The Situation

The brief was to evolve an ageing, awkwardly shaped room layout into a premium training space that mirrors the success of previous IndigoFitness designed North Lanarkshire Council sites.

NLC faced several significant challenges that led them to IndigoFitness:
1. Raised Access Flooring Complications
A large proportion of the training space sat on raised access flooring unsuitable for high‑impact zones.
2. A Highly Irregular Architectural Footprint
The gym’s unconventional shape required imaginative thinking.
3. Creating Revenue Driving Group Training
NLC wanted to add their increasingly popular boutique concept, POWER, to boost both engagement and retention.
4. Designing for a Multigenerational Audience
The gym serves a membership with large numbers of older adults alongside younger, performance-driven users. The layout needed to offer confidence, accessibility, and clear navigation without sacrificing training intensity or capacity.

The Solution

Meticulous Planning & Subfloor Engineering
IndigoFitness worked closely with installation engineers to lift, assess, and repair the raised access floor, ensuring the subfloor was structurally sound for 40mm Enduratile. This enabled the safe installation of heavy equipment and high‑impact zones. Unlocking space that had previously limited programming and usage.

Designing Flow Within a Challenging Layout
The final layout improves movement through the space, reduces intimidation barriers, and supports a mix of independent and instructor‑led training. Functional and S&C spaces are now more accessible to older users while still meeting the expectations of younger, higher‑intensity members.

Custom Equipment to Maximise Space
-Custom cable wall engineered around the irregular footprint

These innovations increase training capacity without expanding the building footprint, essential for Local Authority estates.

A Boutique Offer That Drives Retention
The introduction of a POWER studio adds a high‑value training experience proven to boost attendance, memberships, and cross‑selling of memberships, supporting long-term income generation.

Lighting and Finish Choices That Elevate the Space
A partnership with LED Snaps introduced an atmospheric lighting scheme that defines zones, enhances confidence, and delivers an elevated feel, without compromising practicality.

The Result

The reimagined Time Capsule Gym provides North Lanarkshire Council with:
-A modern, inclusive training space suitable for all ages and abilities
-Increased training capacity within the same footprint
-A revitalised functional and S&C offer supporting community-led training habits
-A new boutique studio designed to improve engagement, retention, and session revenue
-Flooring and equipment solutions selected for durability and long-term value
-A layout that removes barriers to activity for less confident users.

The redevelopment has not only transformed the physical space but has significantly increased community engagement.
In the five months following installation, membership grew from 5,089 to 5,805, demonstrating how the refreshed training space is attracting new users and re-engaging lapsed members.
