After devastating floods on Boxing Day 2015, the Leeds Rugby Academy in Kirkstall was left under 5 feet of water.  The training pitches, changing rooms, medical rooms and gymnasium were all affected and the training equipment was left severely flood damaged.

The Challenge

With the start of the new season looming fast and Leeds Rhinos preparing to defend their recently won Super League title, they needed a new training space as fast as possible.  Head of Athletic Performance, Jason Davidson said “It took ten years to make the environment we had at Kirkstall and that was all swept away in the floods.  The challenge now is to make the new gym better than ever and create a working environment that is second to none.”  However, before thoughts could switch to the future they needed to assess the damage caused by the floods, work out whether anything was salvageable, and clear out the space ready for the re-build to begin.

The Solution

Leeds Rhino’s needed a partner who could come in, assess the damage, remove the flood damaged equipment and then work closely with them on developing a new training space, all in a very short timescale. Jason has a long relationship with the team at Indigo and knew they were the right choice. He said “I’ve worked with the team at Indigo over a 10 year period, including on two complete gym refurbishments. What makes them different is having a true end to end approach – they can design a training space, manufacture equipment, advise on correct flooring specification and complete the full installation – so I knew I could approach them with this project.”

Indigo immediately got to work on clearing out the flood damaged equipment, completing assessments on every piece and refurbishing where possible. They then got to work on the requirements of the new space, working closely with Jason to make sure the vision was realised.

Jason chose DuraTRAIN rubber flooring tiles as the main flooring solution. Their superior noise and vibration reduction properties made them ideal for the heavy use strength training areas, and because Indigo were able to integrate the lifting platforms directly into the tiles it created a seamless training surface with no trip hazards, plus removed the need to purchase separate lifting platforms. The flooring was completed with a 20m functional track, complete with bespoke markings and full colour Leeds Rhino’s logo.

Five newly designed and interconnected Elite Power Racks were the ideal choice for the heart of the strength training area, allowing a large number of players to safely train at the same time. The interconnecting wings utilise the otherwise dead space in-between each rack – removing the need for additional suspension training anchor points or wall mounted pull up bars. The positioning of the 20m track in front of this area allows for speed and quickness drills to be performed prior, during or post lifting. The space was completed with RAZE Elite plates and bars, RAZE dumbells and benches, a range of single station strength equipment and a cardio zone.

The Results

The new training space was delivered on-time and exceeded all expectations. Jason says “Indigo really understand the requirements of a true performance training space, and not just one that works for our elite team, but one that considers the requirements of our academy players also. Our gym will be used continually, and the equipment and flooring will definitely be up to the job. Plus, the whole space just looks and feels great. Everything is in the club colours and getting our logo on the equipment and flooring makes us feel right at home.”
